“Never pretend to know something you don’t. Also, never only say “I don’t know” it should always be followed by “but I know how to find out; let me get back to you”.” Jenny Dybedahl

Jenny Dybedahl is a consultant at Init AB. She works with security, PKI and systems administrations for unix/linux.

Reason to choose STEM industry: When I was in my mid20s. I’d been working in a few different industries (shipping, translation), but I’d always been the one who’d fixed the computers wherever I worked. And then I discovered the Internet, found my way to Usenet and started learning about Unix. I loved working with it, I found it so much clearer and more straightforward than the Windows systems I’d worked with before, so I decided to start learning enough to get a job working with Unix. And I did!

Education: I took a one term course in basic computer science, at half-speed, since I was also working full-time at that time. I got my first sysadmin job around the time that course was finished, so I never went on to do the next course.

Role Models and Mentors: Many! Early on, most of my role models were from the Usenet alt.sysadmin.recovery group, where e.g. Zebee Johnstone, Frossie, LeeAnne, Abigail, Skud, and many others used to hang out. I haven’t had a mentor as such, but I’ve always had a lot of support from the communities I’ve been a part of.

Career Accomplishments: There are many things I’m proud of, so it’s hard to choose just one!

Best advice given to you: Never pretend to know something you don’t. Also, never only say “I don’t know” it should always be followed by “but I know how to find out; let me get back to you”.
