“Believe in yourself and go for it. Listen to what you want and what you feel capable of and do not listen to voices telling about an easy path or something that you do not want. Follow your passion.” Ana Alonso

Ana Alonso is a Telecommunication Consultant at ÅF.

Reason to choose STEM industry: While studying at the University I was looking for a part time job (difficult to find in Mexico) and I saw an announcement at the University where they were looking for a person to work in the Cost Area in a Telecommunication factory. The Engineering principal told me, go for it.

Education: I have studied BSc in Information Technologies and Telecommunications from Anáhuac University, Mexico City and an MSc in Engineering and Management of Information Systems at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm , Sweden

Role Models and Mentors: I don’t have any role models or mentors, but I get inspired by my surroundings and from successful histories of outstanding men/women. If I fail, I have to rise myself and go on and continue trying.

Career Accomplishments: Successfully Leading international technical projects and winning confidence and respect of my colleagues are my biggest careers accomplishments.

Best thing about being in STEM: Being in the place where new technology is created, to create things or design things that are new. To be able to influence.

Challenges Faced: As Engineer you have different pathways in your career. To become a Manager, and Specialist or a Project Manager. My challenge has been to keep a leg immersed in technology while trying other positions such as Project Manager. I love technology and I believe that better leaders are the ones that understand the company’s product/service, that knows about the future in that industry and use it to define a good strategy for the company or in some cases to change direction.

Advice for Women in STEM: Believe in yourself and go for it. Listen to what you want and what you feel capable of and do not listen to voices telling about an easy path or something that you do not want. Follow your passion.

Smartest move in your career: Study a Master of Science at KTH. It opened doors to new knowledge, exciting job, new country also helped expand my network internationally.

Best advice given to you: There are two best advices given to me. Firstly “Networking is the key”. Secondly I read the following from a women I admire: “tell your manager what you want, managers can not read minds”.
